Our Ivanhowe was a standout performer in his native Germany prior to transferring to the care of Team Freedman partway through the recent Autumn Carnival, and has quickly stamped his claims as one to watch this time in placing ninth in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) first-up and a close second in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) last time.

A number of the race’s leading international hopes in Fame Game, Snow Sky and Trip To Paris have all drawn inside alleys for the 2015 Caulfield Cup and Freedman is confident Our Ivanhowe’s allocation will play directly into his strengths on Saturday.

“He’s a very big horse, and he doesn’t need to be crammed up in a hectic race, and not getting galloping room when he needs it, and I think these European horses are very much the same,” Freedman told Racing Ahead.

“I found it a little interesting from my perspective that some of the inside gates that the raiders have got are an advantage. It may be an advantage for a horse from this end of the world that can jump to take a handy position with no weight on its back.

“I’ve had many runners in Caulfield Cups, and it can be – with the big field over 2400m – an issue stuck on the inside with so many horses around you.”

Our Ivanhowe will carry 4kgs less than his Bart Cummings allocation in the 2015 Caulfield Cup and Freedman is confident he is approaching peak condition.

“His work hasn’t varied much, but his finishing efforts when we let him run home at the end of that work, have been very sharp his last two workouts,” he said.

“I think that’s a fitness thing, when a horse is feeling well, they run home well at the finish. I can only say positive things coming out of his last race.”

A two-time Group 1 winner, Our Ivanhowe produced career best form through a standout 2014 racing campaign highlighted by success in the Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Baden (2413m) and Group 1 Preis von Bayern (2414m) and a credible sixth in the Group 1 Japan Cup (2400m).
