The first of the three Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors – the Caulfield Cup – takes place as the headline race of 2016 Caulfield Cup Day on Saturday October 15.

The Caulfield Cup Day meeting features a cracking card of 10 races with the $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) taking centre stage.

Seven other Group races support the 2016 Caulfield Cup on the program including the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1000m) for the short-distance specialists and the $200,000 Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) for the Myer Classic-bound mares.

Caulfield Cup Day features the first leg of the coveted Spring Cups double with the best performers in the Caulfield Cup field heading towards a run at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November in the iconic $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

The 2016 Caulfield Cup field is officially released by Racing Victoria (RV) on Tuesday October 11 at 10:00am (AEDT).

The latest round of Caulfield Cup Day acceptances on the day’s Group 1 feature were third declarations taken this week featuring 30 Caulfield Cup hopefuls.

Heading the 2016 Caulfield Cup third acceptances are the likes of Turnbull Stakes winner Hartnell, Ciaron Maher’s class mare Jameka, Lee & Anthony Freedman’s import Exosphere and last year’s third placegetter Our Ivanhowe.

Leading the updated Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au in pre-field markets is Jameka ($3.60) who ran second to Hartnell in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) last Sunday.

The John O’Shea-trained Hartnell follows in those futures Caulfield Cup betting markets at $4.40 despite also holding an entry for the follow Saturday’s $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

The best fancied of the remaining international Caulfield Cup entries is the Charlie Appleby-trained British galloper Scottish ($9).

Caulfield Cup Day features a host of top spring betting options for punters and many of the races on the Caulfield Cup Day line-up serve as an early guide for upcoming Group 1 races.

2016 Caulfield Cup Day Races

Race 1 – $120,000 Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m)

Set weights plus penalties race for three-year-old colts and geldings.

Race 2 – $500,000 Group 3 Ladbrokes Caulfield Classic (2000m)

Set weights race for three-year-olds and one of the most lucrative Group 3 races of the year. 2016 Caulfield Classic second acceptances are now out and feature 50 entries including Group 1 winning Kiwi Sacred Elixir, Hey Doc and smart filly Moqueen.

Race 3 – $100,000 Super Vobis Three-Years-Old Fillies plate (1400m)

Set weights plus penalties race for three-year-old fillies offering a SUPER VOBIS bonus.

Race 4 – $150,000 Group 3 New Zealand Bloodstock Ethereal Stakes (2000m).

Set weights plus penalties race for three-year-old fillies. The day’s first Group race, good chance for staying types heading towards the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival to stake their claims.

Race 5 – $200,000 Group 2 Dilmah Single Origin Teas Caulfield Sprint (1000m)

Handicap open to all ages and sexes. Nice early guide for upcoming springs like the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on VRC Derby Day.

Race 6 – $150,000 Group 3 Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes (1400m)

Set weights plus penalties race for horses aged four-years-old and over sponsored by Ladbrokes.com.au.

Race 7 – $150,000 Group 3 Priceline Cup (2000m)

Handicap open to all ages and sexes. Previously known as the David Jones Cup.

Race 8 – $3,000,000 Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Handicap open to all ages and sexes with a minimum weight of 50kg. The day’s feature race and the 2016 Caulfield Cup results can prove a good guide for the upcoming Melbourne Cup over the two miles.

Race 9 – $120,000 Listed Crown Golden Ale Alinghi Stakes (1100m)

Set weights plus penalties race for fillies and mares aged three-years-old and over. The penultimate event on the card.

Race 10 – $200,000 Group 2 Schweppes Tristarc Stakes (1400m).

Set weights plus penatlies race for mares aged four-years-old and above. Card closer and a nice guide for the upcoming Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington held the Saturday before Melbourne Cup Day.
