2016 Caulfield Cup Tips & Selections

October 14th, 2016

The 2016 Caulfield Cup takes centre stage in Melbourne this weekend and the latest betting tips and updated odds on the world’s richest mile and a half handicap are detailed below.

Our Ivanhowe

Two early scratchings from the original line-up for Saturday’s $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) sees the emergencies De Little Engine and Vengeur Masque both gain a run in the first of the ‘Big 3’ spring majors.

Clear favourite in the latest Caulfield Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au remains Jameka, the Ciaron Maher-trained daughter of Myboycharlie out to improve on her second to Hartnell in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington a fortnight back.

Returning to Caulfield, dropping in weight and getting out over the extra metres all work in the four-year-old’s favour and Jameka pays $3.70 in the current Caulfield Cup odds.

She is on the drift however and history shows if she salutes for the punters and dominates the feature race of Caulfield Cup Day she’ll be the shortest-priced mare to win since Leilani ($3.25 in 1974).

So if not the favourite, who are the punters coming for to be this year’s Caulfield Cup winner?

The Charlie Appleby-trained, Godolphin-raced British raider Scottish has firmed from $8 to $7.50 to continue the good recent record of internationals in the Caulfield Cup results.

He is drawn in the race’s second most successful barrier in the past 30 years (7) and has Kerrin McEvoy aboard this weekend for his first-up run in Australia.

Just shorter in betting is former Perth Cup winning mare over the distance Real Love ($8 into $7) who is the sole runner for last year’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir.

History shows however that in the past decade only three single-figure horses have saluted in the Caulfield Cup, which opens up the value in a longer-priced hopeful to keep the trend going in 2016.

So who should you back and who should you sack in Caulfield Cup Day Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEDT)?

2016 Caulfield Cup Tips: Our Ivanhowe to win from Jameka and Real Love @ Ladbrokes.com.au

2016 Caulfield Cup Winner:

#2 Our Ivanhowe ($26)

This German expat finished third in the Caulfield Cup trifecta 12 months ago and is at a juicy price to defeat history by backing up a year later and winning. Co-trainer Lee Freedman has won the race four times previously, while jockey Dwayne Dunn won aboard Tawqeet (2006). Our Ivanhowe gives weight away carrying 56.5kg, but that’s only a half-kilo more than he had on his back last spring and history shows those above 55kg in the Caulfield Cup weights have a gun recent record. Gets the run of the race from barrier six, which produced last year’s champ, has subsequently won the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in the winter and the 2400m suits third-up on Saturday.

2016 Caulfield Cup Runner-Up:

#11 Jameka ($3.70)

The favourite has some imposing historical facts and hoodoos to overcome if she is to go back-to-back for the Caulfield Cup favourite backers this weekend. No Victorian Oaks winner has ever trained on and won a Caulfield Cup the following spring, but she’s short-priced to be the first. She originally drew barrier 13 but now starts from 12, which hasn’t produced a winner in over 30 years. Still the light weight (52.5kg) and continuing association with Nicholas Hall are ticks and she’ll be hard to hold out late.

2016 Caulfield Cup Third-Place:

#12 Real Love ($7)

Sticking with the mares to fill the placings and think Weir’s last start JRA Cup winner has the upside to run a big race here getting out over the 2400m, a distance she boasts a strong record over (5-1-1-2) including a previous Perth Cup win. She drops from 58kg last start to 52.5kg on the weekend and there’s no denying Weir knows how to train the stayers for the big races.
